The Ethiopian Association in the Greater Toronto Area and Surrounding Region (EAGTA SR) has been a cornerstone of the Ethiopian community since its establishment in 1981. As a volunteer-based, Black-led, Black-serving, and Black-centered organization, EAGTA SR is dedicated to empowering individuals of Ethiopian and African origin. We strive to foster inclusivity, promote cultural heritage, and create sustainable programs that address the diverse needs of our community.

Our association serves as a welcoming space where newcomers, seniors, and families can find support, connection, and opportunities for growth. Through our culturally informed, Afrocentric approach, we focus on uplifting marginalized voices, advocating for systemic change, and fostering resilience within our community.

Mission

✦ The Ethiopian Association in the Greater Toronto Area and Surrounding Regions is a non-political, non-profit, independent, community-based organization established and run by volunteer members who seek no financial or other gains for their participation in the activities of the Association and paid professional staff.
✦ The Association is committed to facilitating the full participation of all persons of Ethiopian origin in the social, cultural and civic life of Canada, and to the preservation and promotion of their rich and diverse cultural heritage.
✦ The Association’s programs and services are provided without discrimination on the Basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, age, ethnic origin, creed, political affiliation, religion, physical or mental disability.

Aims and Objectives

✦ To facilitate the integration of Ethiopians and other new comers in Greater Toronto Area and the Surrounding Regions in the Canadian society and to foster the retention and development of their cultural heritage within the framework of multi-culturalism.
✦ To facilitate and assist in the resettlement of newly arriving Ethiopians and others and the adaptation of those residing in the Greater Toronto Area and Surrounding Regions.
✦ To provide orientation services and information on housing, education, job opportunities, health care, legal aid and other services.
✦ To maintain liaison with relevant public and private agencies, local, provincial and federal organizations to promote the flow of information and services.
✦ To conduct research and collection of demographic and other data to assist in the assessment of the needs of Ethiopians and other newcomers who seek our services
✦ To encourage and promote individual and community development initiatives by providing support in terms of facilitation with private and public institutions and giving technical advice
✦ To educate and sensitize the Canadian public about the plight of Ethiopians and other refugees throughout the world and to seek government and private assistance in the alleviation of this problem
✦ To gather information, report and conduct educational forum and activities on the conditions of Human Rights in Ethiopia and other parts of the world in relation to UN Treaties, Covenants and Conventions.
✦ To promote the development, administration and enforcement of just and equitable policies and legislation concerning all refugees.
✦ To act as a medium of communication between peoples of Ethiopian and other origins and all levels of government on matters related to them.
✦ To assist in the development and foster cooperation among local, provincial and federal Ethiopian and other organizations in order to promote goodwill and mutual cooperation among people of Ethiopian and other origins
✦ To plan, organize and carry out educational, social and cultural activities
✦ To promote, encourage and undertake projects and activities which will further the aim of the Association

Crisis Response Team

The Crisis Response Team at the Ethiopian Association in the Greater Toronto Area and Surrounding Region (EAGTA SR) is a dedicated group of volunteers committed to supporting individuals and families during times of urgent need. Grounded in compassion, cultural understanding, and community resilience, our team steps in to provide timely assistance and advocacy when it matters most.

Rahel Gettu, President

Rahel GetTu, President of the Board of Direcors

Rahel Gettu is a policy and community engagement leader working at the intersection of accessibility, inclusion, newcomer integration, and civic participation. She currently serves as President of the Ethiopian Association in the GTA and Surrounding Regions, where she is focused on strengthening governance, community engagement, institutional partnerships, and inclusive community development across the Greater Toronto Area.

With more than 15 years of international and Canadian experience, Rahel has worked across global health, policy, research, operations, communications, partnership development, and community leadership. Her professional background includes work within the United Nations system in both Geneva and country offices, as well as experience living and working across multiple countries. These experiences have shaped her global perspective on inclusion, equity, accessibility, and community informed leadership.

In Canada, her work has focused on disability inclusion, workforce participation, and community informed approaches to public engagement and employment inclusion. She also serves as a member of the Parent Involvement Advisory Committee (PIAC) within the public education system, contributing to discussions related to inclusive education, parent engagement, accessibility, and student well being.

Rahel holds a Master of Business Leadership from the University of South Africa and a Master of Public Health. She also completed professional training in community healthcare administration at Toronto Metropolitan University.

Her leadership emphasizes collaboration, accountable governance, and building stronger connections between communities, institutions, and policymakers to support inclusive and practical solutions for diverse populations across Canada.


Netsanet Alem, Vice President of the Board of Direcors

Netsanet Alem is a licensed financial professional with over a decade of experience in the financial services industry. She is passionate about empowering individuals and families through financial literacy, helping them build financial stability and long-term security.

She is the founder of TGLC Financial Literacy, where she is dedicated to educating the community and promoting financial awareness across generations. Netsanet has been actively serving the Ethiopian Association community through volunteer work, including her role in the Crisis Response Committee, where she has supported newcomers with settlement needs, housing guidance, and coordination of community support.

Netsanet contributed to the development of the Association’s strategic planning initiatives, supporting long-term vision, governance improvement, and organizational growth. She currently serves as the Vice President of the Ethiopian Association, where she is committed to strengthening community engagement, supporting initiatives, and driving meaningful and lasting impact.
